The Baltimore Orioles held on to win 6-5 in a game marred by heavy rain and wind over the Kansas City Royals Saturday night in Kansas City. It was the Orioles' 12th straight win over the Royals.
Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora opened the games with singles. Nick Markakis and Aubrey Huff made outs before Kevin Millar hit a three-run homerun. The Orioles had not had a three-run homerun all season but have now hit one in three consecutive games.
After the top of the first inning, the game was suspended for 1 hour and 52 minutes due to heavy rains and 40 MPH winds. The weather remained poor for the majority of the night.
Luis Hernandez played well defensively in place of Brian Roberts who did not come back after the rain delay because of a bruised foot -- he's day-to-day. Manager Dave Trembley cited poor defensive play when he announced that Freddie Bynum would replace Hernandez as the Orioles' starting shortstop. To boot, Hernandez had two hits.
On the game, Trembley said, “One of the better team games we played all year. It was a tremendous team game for us.”
