The Baltimore Ravens traded down from the eighth pick overall to Jacksonville's 26th overall slot. Their thinking appears to indicate that with Matt Ryan off the board they will trade down and select one of the lower rated quarterbacks. That proved to be accurate as the Ravens later traded up to 18th overall to select QB Joe Flacco from Delaware.
Flacco has great size which leads to a big frame. His arm is the complete package as he can make the deep throws, is accurate and has nice touch and timing. He had a very good senior season in which he passed for over 4,000 yards, completed 63% of his passes, and threw 23 touchdowns with just five interceptions.
The main criticism of Flacco is that he may not be a first round talent. He played a lot in the shotgun and has not faced top of the line competition. He is too confident in his arm and will force passes. Some question his instincts and he needs to improve his mechanics and footwork. He is not very mobile.
The Ravens acquired two third round picks and a fourth when they traded down. They gave up a third and a fifth to move back up.
With their second round pick, the Ravens selected running back Ray Rice. Rice is a fast runner with lots of college production. He rushed for over 2,000 yards last season and nearly 1,800 the season before. Critics will point to his 5" 9' frame as a concern. His upside is also described as limited, in part because he has already been used heavily.
