Wednesday's games

Pitchers' duel in Atholton/Hammond matchup

Freshman Haylie Goheen pitched Atholton to an eight inning 1-0 win over previously undefeated defending county and 2A state champion Hammond (10-1) on Wednesday. Both pitchers gave up just one hit. The winning run came on a fielder's choice bunt. A pinch runner, Sam Keeter, entered the game at second base and stole 3rd. She came out ahead in a collision at the plate. Goheen walked just one and struck out 14. Her opposite number, Stephanie Speierman, struck out 17 walked two and surrendered one hit.

Frankfort upsets Allegany

Jasmine Morgan hit a two-run homerun in the top of the eighth inning to put Frankfort ahead of Allegany 9-7 Wednesday. Morgan's homerun, which was her second hit of the game, came with two outs. Allegany struck out the first two batters before Rachel Alkire doubled. Morgan's at-bat was next. Three Allegany players homered but two of them came with the bases emptied. Hayley Stankan and Alkire combined to strike out 11 Allegany batters. Allegany falls to 9-3 on the season with the loss.

Spalding's Nescio one hits the Institute of Notre Dame

Elaine Nesico struck out 12 batters while allowing just one hit in Spalding's 5-0 win Wednesday. Spalding improved to 10-1 with the win. Only one RBI was issued to Spalding on their five runs. Mistakes were key as wild pitches and walks contributed heavily to in the early innings. Spalding scored four of its five runs in the first inning; the fifth run came in the second inning.

Mountain Ridge shuts Hampshire out

Keri Bean pitched No. 3 Mountain Ridge to a shut out win over Hampshire on Wedneday. Bean surrendered just four hits, all singles, and she gave up two walks. She only had one strikeout. Mountain Ridge improved to 9-3 on the year while Hampshire falls to 7-13.

Annapolis demolishes Southern

Annapolis beat 0-10 Southern by a score of 13-0 Wednesday. Annapolis, 3-7 themselves on the season, won the game on the strength of senior catcher Erin Delaney. Delaney was 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. She threw out two runners on the bases and took part in a rundown to keep Southern off of the scoreboard.

Northeast blanks Old Mill

Northeast beat Old Mill by a score of 9-0 on Wednesday behind the arm of junior Heather Brown who struck out 11 in a one-hit shutout over Old Mill. Northeast improves to 10-4 with the win while Old Mill drops to 4-7. Fellow junior Lizzy Waddell went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBI to provide offensive support.

Arundel dominates South River

Arundel starter Kayla Martinez struck out 11 in five innings of work and held South River to two hits in their 15-1 win on Wednesday. Arundel had 18 hits. In support of Martinez, Kayla Sortor hit two doubles and had two RBI; Sara Vann went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI while Amanda Hedgepeth went 3-for-4 with a double. Martinez helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Arundel improves to 8-4 on the season while South River falls to 3-12.

Chesapeake rolls past Glen Burnie

Chesapeake behind the efforts of junior Lauren Gibson beat Glen Burnie 9-1 on Wednesday. Gibson had a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts. She also had three hits and two RBI. Chesapeake improves to 13-1 on the season while Glen Burnie falls to 7-6. Chesapeake scored seven runs in the first three innings.

Chapelgate sweeps AACS in doubleheader

Chapelgate beat AACS in both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday by scores of 8-2 and 10-2. The doubleheader included the completion of a suspended game. AACS falls to 2-8 with the losses. Sophomores Kiersten Waltz and Marissa Minor each had a two RBI game but their efforts came in separate games.
North County tops Meade

North County beat Meade 8-5 on Wednesday.

Meade, who fell to 2-8, jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning. But North County came right back with a four run second. Meade made it interesting with another run in the fourth but Meade scored three in the sixth and one in the seventh to widen the margin.

North Carroll tops rival South Carroll

North Carroll senior Ashley Wood gave herself all the offense she would need with a RBI double in the first inning. North Carroll, which improves to 8-4 with the win, went on to win the game 8-0 on Wednesday. Wood allowed just one hit while striking out 12 in the win.

Tuesday's games

Different game for Archbishop Spalding

Last season, Stephanie Weigman – an all-county selection – pitched all but 13 innings for the Archbishop Spalding Cavilers. This year, junior Elaine Nescio is the star for the Cavilers. Nescio improved her record to 8-1 with an 0.92 ERA after she beat Mount de Sales, 6-2. She struck out nine, while yielding three hits and two earned runs. No. 3 Archbishop Spalding improves to 10-1 while No. 7 Mount de Sales falls to 9-4.

Severna Park out slugs South River

Behind Autumn Taylor's four RBI Severna Park beat South River 15-9. South River falls to 3-11 on the season while Severna Park improves to one game over .500 at 7-6. Taylor was 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI. Despite the final score, South River erupted for eight runs in the third inning and out-hit Severna 15-11 but made seven errors in the game.

Glen Burnie edges Old Mill

Glen Burnie beat Old Mill by a score of 4-3 on the strength of a three-run homerun by Meagan Sauble in the seventh inning. Senior Erica Kinney was also key in the win allowing just one hit with four strikeouts and scoring the winning run. She reached on an error, stole two bases and then scored on a past ball. Glen Burnie improves to 7-5 on the season while Old Mill falls to 4-6.

Chesapeake rolls by Annapolis

Chesapeake scored 10 runs in their shutout win over Annapolis. Chesapeake scored seven runs in the first two innings and tacked on three in the final frame. They improve to 12-1 on the season while Annapolis is just 2-8. Sophomore Nicole Mantheiy allowed just two hits in the game and struck out seven in a five inning game. Mantheiy was also 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and four RBI.

Notre Dame Prep destroys St. Mary's

Notre Dame Prep won 16-3 over St. Mary's. They notched 14 hits on their way to improving to 8-2. St. Mary's falls to 3-8. Notre Dame Prep scored eight runs in the first two innings with six of them coming in the first inning. They also tacked on seven runs in the last two innings of the game.
