The tipoff to the Ray Mullis Classic at Cardinal Gibbons High School was a matchup between the upstart, and #14 ranked, Glenelg Country and the old school, #9 Digital Harbor. The young, but very talented, Dragons of Glenelg started off strong thanks to the inside play of sophomore Isaiah Miles and led the Rams by 5 at the half. But senior Davon Usher overcame his slow 1st half (5ts) to light it up in the 2nd half for 18 points, and lead the Rams to a come from behind 63-54 victory.
Justin Jackson and Richard Robinson each contributed 15 points for the Rams. Miles finished with a game high 25 points and 18 rebounds while Justin Johnson added 16 in the Dragons(7-2) second loss of the season.
Digital Harbor had an early 8-6 lead in the 1st quarter when Glenelg went on a 13-0 run to end the quarter with a 19-8 lead. Miles had 8 pts. and 8 reb. in the opening quarter. Early in the 2nd quarter the rams had their own spurt as they went a 10-0 run, led by Usher's 5 pts., to get within 21-18. Miles finished the quarter strong and Glenelg went to the break up 28-23.
The 3rd quarter was a sea saw battle as the Rams started out on a 5-0 run as a three by Usher tied it at 28. Glenelg then got the next 6 points, 4 from Miles, to go back up 34-28. Digital Harbor then turned up the defensive pressure and scored 12 straight, including back to back threes from Usher, to surge to their largest lead of the night at 40-34. The teams traded baskets before Glenelg scored the final 5 points of the quarter to close within 1 at 44-43 with just 8 minutes to play.
The Dragons stayed close for about the first 2:30 minutes of the 4th and then Usher had seen enough. He connected for his 5th three pointer of the game and then drove hard to the basket on the Rams next two possesssions to draw fouls. He made all 4 free throws and at that point he had scored 7 consecutive points, and the Rams lead was up to 8 at 55-47. The Dragons would never get closer than 6 points after that.
The win moves Digital Harbor to 6-2 on the season and a matchup tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Gibbons-Wilde Lake game for the championship.
Glenelg will face the loser of that matchup at 5 p.m. in the consolation game.
