Alumni Report: New Contract for Floyd, Locals in the NBA

Gavin Floyd Signs Extension

Yesterday was a good day for Mt. St. Joe Alum Gavin Floyd. Gavin avoided arbitration and signed a 4 year $15.5 million extension with the Chicago White Sox. The 26 year old Floyd turned his career around last year by posting a 17-8 record with a 3.84 ERA.

Locals in the NBA

There are currently 16 players in the NBA that played their High School ball in the State of Maryland. Let's take a look at the seasons these players are having and we will follow their progress throughout the year.

Carmelo Anthony (Towson Catholic)

The Nuggets are putting together their best season since Carmelo joined the club in 2003. The team traded Allen Iverson for Chauncy Billups, and the move has paid big dividends. The Nuggets are 45-26 and just 1.5 games out of 2nd place in the Wild West. Carmelo is putting together another great year, he is averaging 22.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.

Kevin Durant (Montrose Christian)

Over the last 2 years, Kevin Durant has won a College Basketball Player of the Year Award and a NBA Rookie of the Year Award. Mr. Durant is putting together another great season this year. Although his Oklahoma City Thunder are only 20-50, the Suitland Native is averaging 26 points per game (4th in the NBA), 2.9 assists, and 1.2 steals.

Jeff Green (Northwestern PG)

Durant's teammate and fellow PG County native Jeff Green is also excelling in his sophomore season with the Thunder. Jeff has improved his scoring to 17.1 PPG, while grabbing 7 RPG.

Rudy Gay (Spalding)

The Memphis Grizzlies are suffering through a 17-53 season, but have developed two stars in Baltimore's Rudy Gay, and OJ Mayo. Rudy is averaging 18-6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game.

Delonte West (Roosevelt)

The Cleveland Cavaliers have the best record in the NBA at 57-13, including a 32-1 home record. Roosevelt Grad Delonte West is one of the team's starters, and he is averaging 11.6 PPG, 3.5 APG. He is also shooting 39% from beyond the arc.

Jarrett Jack (DeMatha)

Fort Washington's Jarrett Jack has finally found a home with the Indiana Pacers. He is having his best season yet, averaging 12.9 points and 3.7 assists per game. The Pacers luck has not been so great, they are only 29-42 on the season.

Linas Kleiza (Montrose Christian)

Linas Kleiza has been a solid contributer to this year's improved Denver Nuggetts team. The Montrose Christian Alum is averaging 9.7 points and and 4 Rebounds per game.

Juan Dixon (Calvert Hall)

Former Maryland Star Juan Dixon is making his second tour with the Washington Wizards. Juan is averaging 5.2 PPG and 2.3 APG as a back up for the Wiz. Juan continues to be a sharpshooter as he averages 36% from the 3 point line.

Keith Bogans (DeMatha)

Keith Bogans is now with the Milwaukee Bucks after being traded from the Orlando Magic. I hope he bought a new winter Coat! Keith is averaging 5.7 PPG, and 1 APG.

Sam Cassell (Dunbar)

After winning his 3rd NBA Championship last year with the Celtics, Sam basically became an Assistant Coach with Boston this year, but then Sam was traded to the Kings in a money saving move.

Josh Boone (South Carroll)

In Boone's 3rd NBA season, his production has lowered because of the New Jersey Nets addition of C Brook Lopez. Josh is averaging 4.1 PPG and 4 RPG.

The Rookies

Michael Beasley (Riverdale Baptist)-Miami Heat 13.3 PPG, 5.1 RPG

Joe Alexander (Linganore)-Milwaukee Bucks 4.2 PPG, 1.8 RPG

Roy Hibbert (Georgetown Prep)-Indiana Pacers 6.5 PPG, 3PG, 1.1 BPG

Donte Greene (Towson Catholic)-Sacramento Kings 3.9 PPG, 1.6 RPG

Joey Dorsey (Douglass)-Houston Rockets 0.7 PPG, 0.3 RPG
