Inside presence leads Morgan State to MEAC title, NCAA bid

WINSTON-SALEM- The inside presence of Morgan State’s MEAC Defensive Player of the Year Kevin Thompson combined with the outside shooting of MEAC Rookie of the Year DeWayne Jackson was a bit too much to overcome for the South Carolina State Bulldogs in a 68-61 victory in the MEAC Basketball Tournament Championship game at the Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum.

#10 UNCW UPSETS #7 TIGERS IN CAA FIRST ROUND ACTION

HARRISONBURG, Va. – #10 UNC Wilmington earned an upset win over the #7 Tigers by a 50-30 score in the first round of the 2010 Virginia 529 College Savings Plan CAA Women’s Basketball Championship. Towson (15-15) got 11 points from Shanae Baker-Brice in her final game.

“My congratulations to UNC Wilmington, they played well and deserve to move on,” said Coach Joe Mathews. “I thought we looked tight and did not play well defensively and not taking care of the basketball ihurt.”

BAKER-BRICE AND SNOWDEN EARN ALL-CAA HONORS

HARRISONBURG, Va. – For the second straight season, Shanae Baker-Brice earned a spot on the first team All-Colonial Athletic Association squad. Baker-Brice becomes the first Tiger to earn first team honors two years in a row since Danielle Barry was a first team selection in the Big South during the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons.

Haliena Snowden earned CAA honorable mention all-academic honors to join Baker-Brice as the Tigers who were honored.

WINSTON-SALEM- It wasn’t surprising in the fact that the game was an absolute meat grinder. It was Casey Morton that stepped up early and often to help lead UMES past Delaware State 52-45 in the first round of the MEAC Basketball Tournament at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Greivis Vasquez earned the 2010 Player of the Year and Gary Williams was voted the 2010 Coach of the Year as the Atlantic Coast Conference announced its top individual awards on Tuesday.

The voting was done by members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

Vasquez, a senior from Caracas, Venezeula, is the fifth University of Maryland player to earn ACC Player of the Year honors and the first since Juan Dixon earned the award in 2002. Len Bias won twice (1985, 1986), Albert King won in 1980 and Joe Smith won the award in 1995.

SHANAE BAKER-BRICE NAMED CAA CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK

RICHMOND, Va. – After pouring in a game-high 20 points to lead the Tigers to their first ever win over Old Dominion, Shanae Baker-Brice (Theodore Roosevelt H.S./Washington, D.C.) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week by league officials.

Baker-Brice, who shares the honors with Tasha Pye of William & Mary, earns co-player of the week honors for the third time this season and fifth time in her career.

RICHMOND, Va. - Towson's season came to an abrupt halt with an 86-56 loss to top-seeded Old Dominion in Saturday afternoon's quarterfinal of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Basketball Tournament in the Richmond Coliseum.

After dispatching UNC Wilmington 91-74 in a first round contest, the Tigers were hoping for an upset of the favored Monarchs but ODU's size proved too much for Towson to handle. The loss sends the Tigers home with a final 10-21 record and put a stop to their three-game win streak. The Monarchs advanced to the semifinals with a 24-8 mark.

Loyola gets torched for 51 first-half points; can’t come back

ALBANY, N.Y. (March 5, 2010) – Manhattan went on a 17-2 run after Loyola scored the game’s first basket and never looked back as it recorded a 94-79 MAAC Championship First Round victory Friday night at the Times Union Center. The Jaspers now advance to Saturday’s MAAC Championship Quarterfinal against top-seeded Siena while the season ends for the Greyhounds with five losses in their last six outings.

RICHMOND, Va. - Towson will be put to the test tomorrow when it faces top-seeded Old Dominion, but for now, the Tigers can savor their convincing 91-74 victory over UNC Wilmington. The Tigers' first round victory advanced them to the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association's Championship Basketball Tournament for the fourth year in a row.
